Wed., 10:28am: UPDATE Civil rights groups in Warren call for patience

WARREN — African-American leaders here said Wednesday morning that they are convinced that the city is properly handling the investigation into Saturday morning’s incident in which a police officer shot and killed a young black man.

Leaders of the Greater Warren Youngstown Urban League, Trumbull County NAACP and local churches met with Warren Mayor Doug Franklin Monday.

“We are remaining patient and urge the community to be patient,” said Thomas Conley of the Urban League.

Conley said the leaders agreed to wait for the completion of an investigation by Ohio’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation, which was called in immediately after a city patrolman killed 24-year-old Taemarr Walker of Warren about 2 a.m. near the intersection of Risher and Palmyra roads S.W. after firing more than one shot.
