Wed. 10:48am: Medicaid expansion advocates ready Ohio campaign

COLUMBUS (AP) – Advocates for extending Medicaid coverage in Ohio say they are preparing their campaign to get the issue before voters should the Legislature fail to act.

Leaders from behavioral health, veterans and labor groups are expected to speak at a news conference today at the Statehouse about the campaign.

Backers of Medicaid expansion have said they would prefer that the Legislature pass an extension of the federal-state program.

Lawmakers have been trying to find common ground on whether to expand Medicaid to cover more low-income people. Republican leaders pulled it from the state budget this spring, and the issue has yet to gain traction.

The House speaker recently said his chamber wouldn’t be ready to take any action on Medicaid by October, but more likely by the end of the year.
