Sat 7:11pm: Fruit truck crash closes I-80

HUBBARD A 57-year-old truck driver from Chicago was killed early today when the fruit truck he was driving struck a bridge rail in the westbound lane of Interstate 80, throwing the vehicle off the highway onto railroad tracks below near Mount Everett Road.

Larry J. Johnson of Chicago was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Ohio Sate Highway Patrol troopers, who said the truck burst into flames on CSX tracks.

The accident occurred at 6:13 a.m. west of U.S. Route 62. Troopers said the crash shutdown the eastbound lane of I-80 for 90 minutes while the scene was cleaned up of the load of mangos that Johnson was hauling.

The Ohio Department of Transportation eventually declared the bridge structurally sound, but traffic was still restricted to one lane for several hours after the crash. CSX also shut down the railroad line temporarily.

Debris from the crash on the roadway caused subsequent collisions on I-80 as vehicles slowed down to avoid obstacles on the pavement. No serious injuries were reported from the additional accidents.
