Fri., 2:29pm: 8,000 expected at Panerathon

WARREN — The Panerathon 10K/2-mile fun run/walk has become the Valley’s largest community fundraising event over the past three years, raising over $500,000 for the Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center. The event hosted 6,000 community members in 2012, and this year’s Panerathon, set for Sunday, is on pace to have 8,000 or more people in attendance.

One hundred percent of the proceeds from the event benefits the center, which opened its doors almost 2 years ago at St. Elizabeth Health Center in downtown Youngstown. The money raised from Panerathon will support Joanie’s Promise, which ensures access for all Mahoning Valley women to the screenings, care and services at the center regardless of the ability to pay.

Registration and packet pick-up for the walk/run will begin at 8 a.m. followed by a 10 a.m. race start time. Following the 10K and 2-mile races will be the second annual Kids Run presented by PNC Bank at 11:30 a.m.

Last year, the first-ever Kids Run had over 1,000 participants, and this year 1,500 kids are expected to participate. Parents can register their child for free to participate in the event, and all kids get a t-shirt, medal and goody bag.

A post-race celebration will feature entertainment, food and family activities. The celebration includes PNC Bank’s Mobile Learning Adventure, bounce-a-rounds, face painting, exhibits from OH WOW! Science Center, Mill Creek MetroParks, and other local vendors and free massages for runners.

There will be no parking on-site at the Covelli Centre for this year’s Panerathon. The USA Federal Garage located at the corner of Federal Plaza East and Champion Street one block north of the Covelli Centre will be open to Panerathon participants as will several surface parking lots within a 5-minute walk.
