Thu 10:49pm: Hovercraft rescues victims from waters

WARREN — A boater trapped in a tree and floodwater debris in the rushing Mahoning River at the back end of Packard Park has been rescued.

Rescue workers in the Trumbull County hovercraft, after two previous attempts, were able to maneuver into position and rescue the man.

He had been there for about 2 1/2 hours, since about 8:15 p.m.

Initial reports were that it was a man in a kayak and the kayak was hung up on a tree in cross currents. Other reports stated it was two men in a boat, the boat sank, and one of the two men remained trapped on the tree.

Initial rescue attempts were unsuccessful as the rescue boat couldn’t handled the currents, overflowing from flooding caused by torrential rains the day before.

Rescue workers said that not only was the trapped man in danger of having his boat tipped in the current by rescue attempts, but emergency personnel would be in danger too.

The hovercraft arrived around 10 p.m. and and Stat MedEvac helicopter circled overhead providing light.

The man on the tree was finally reached at 10:47 p.m. and brought to shore. Both men were wrapped in blankets and medical attention sought.

Their names and official details of the rescued have not yet been released.
