Mon., 11pm: Struthers investigating possible child abuse

STRUTHERS — Struthers police are investigating a possible child abuse case involving a 2-month-old boy.

Police reports indicate officers found a bath towel stained with blood, a pair of scissors stained with blood and a baby wipe that was lodged in the babys throat at 41 Park Ave., according to Tribune Chronicle news partner WYTV-33.

The boys father, Robert Purfey Jr., 32, was charged Monday with second-degree felony child endangering, a charge that carries an eight-year maximum penalty. He is being held in the Mahoning County Jail on $150,000 bond and is scheduled for a July 15 preliminary hearing.

The boy was taken to Akron Childrens Hospital on Friday where nurses there reported the possible abuse.
