YOUNGSTOWN – Police say a body found more than a year ago near Clarington, Ohio, is that of a Boardman businessman that went missing in 2011. A West Virginia medical examiner took custody of the body because West Virginia has jurisdiction on the river, according to Youngstown Police Chief Rob Foley.

Information released today by Youngstown Police states the remains of James Donofrio, former owner of the Avalon Gardens restaurant and bar on the city’s North Side, were identified by dental records. The department learned the news today, the release states.

Donofrio’s remains were found March 25, 2012, in West Virginia near state Route 7 on the shoreline of the Ohio River.

Donofrio had been reported missing Sept. 26, 2011, and his SUV was later found on the banks of the Mahoning River under the Market Street bridge. Crews searched the river and the adjoining woods several times, but found no trace of him.

The West Virginia State Medical Examiner’s Office has not released a cause of death.
