fri., 11:35am: YSU hires former Kansas coach Mangino

YOUNGSTOWN — Youngstown State hired former Kansas football coach Mark Mangino, the Kansas City Star reported this morning.

Mangino is a New Castle, Pa., native, YSU graduate and a former YSU assistant coach under Jim Tressel. As Kansas head coach from 2003 through 2009, he guided the Jayhawks to a 50-48 record, including back-to-back bowl bids for the first time in school history.

Mangino resigned amid accusations that he mistreated players.

“This is a homecoming for me,” the 56-year-old Mangino said in a statement. “I’m delighted to be at a great school with a great football tradition with a team and coach poised to do great things.”

At YSU, Mangino will serve as assistant head coach, tight end coach and recruiting coordinator under Eric Wolford. Wolford was a lineman at Kansas State when Mangino was the assistant coach.
