Fri. 1:27pm: Boardman boy died of flu strain
YOUNGSTOWN – A 4-year-old Boardman boy died last month of the flu.
The Mahoning County coroner announced today that Hunter Ewert, 4, of Boardman, died of the influenza B virus which is responsible for 24 other deaths nationwide this flu season.
Ewert died early Jan. 12 at Akron Children’s Hospital Beeghly Campus in Boardman after his parents found him unresponsive in his bed.
His parents, Shannon and Brian Ewert, told authorities that Hunter began feeling ill after school the day before. Shannon Ewert, who is a nursing student, said she performed CPR on her son until paramedics arrived at their house.
The flu season runs from late September through late May, and influenza typically peaks in January, February or later.
