Historical society meets Tuesday

HOWLAND — The Howland Historical Society meets 7 p.m. Tuesday at the township administration building,

The guest speaker will be Traci Manning of the Manning Valley Historical Society, who will present on “Extraordinary Women of the American Civil War.”

The meeting is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be available.

Shredding service available to residents

HOWLAND — Residents are invited to bring up to five garbage bags of paper to be professionally shredded 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 20 in gazebo parking lot at the corner of East Market Street and Willow Drive.

Protect-N-Shred of Cortland will provide the free service, but no office or commercial shredding will be authorized.

According to the township trustees, the paper then will be recycled to make paper towels, toilet tissue and paper plates.

Township to spray for mosquitoes

HOWLAND — Alexander Pest Control recently was contracted by the township trustees to spray for mosquitoes 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. May 22-23, June 19-20, July 17-18, Aug. 14-15 and Sept. 11-12.

In case of rain, the spraying will take place the following evening.

Residents are encouraged to close their windows, keep pets indoors and not leave any food outdoors during the spraying.

Township to conduct scrap tire collection

HOWLAND — The township will conduct a scrap tire collection for residents this summer.

Residents may place a maximum of eight passenger tires without rims at the curb before 8 a.m. Aug. 5. Truck tires will not be accepted.

The service is made available through a Geauga-Trumbull Solid Waste Management grant and will be provided by the township’s Public Works Department, 3600 N. River Road, where residents also may drop of scrap tires 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 5-9, June 12-16 and Oct. 2-6.
