Residents, officials raise funds during March for Meals

WARREN — Local officials and residents helped lend a hand or leg by delivering meals and also walking to raise funds for Trumbull Mobile Meals as part of different activities this month for March for Meals.

Becky Edwards, CEO of TMM, said local mayors, trustees and city, village and township officials helped deliver meals to residents in their communities.

“We have the champions from different communities helping us all week delivering meals to residents,” she said.

TMM has 28 delivery routes throughout the county with more than 40 volunteers each day preparing and delivering meals to more than 240 people.

Girard Mayor James Melfi said the event is one he looks forward to each year.

“The residents get surprised when they see me at their front door with their meals. They get to ask me questions and to say hello,” he said.

Warren Mayor Doug Franklin agreed there are many residents with a surprised look on their face when they open their door.

“It gives me joy to get to see them and hand them their meal,” Franklin said.

Liberty Township trustee Jodi Stoyak, who has been a volunteer regularly for 20 years, said it has been very gratifying to be able to help.

“Twenty years has gone by in a blink of an eye. I never realized I have done this that long. The residents open their doors with a smile and really appreciate this. The meals are something that are needed and well received,’ Stoyak said.

She said a few weeks ago, when the weather was very cold, the residents were so thankful to receive a hot meal.

Edwards said the entire month is to focus on advocacy for the people who need the meals and also those who help make it possible by volunteering.

“We have so many volunteers who are dedicated and help on a weekly basis,” she said.

To also help raise funds, more than 100 people walked Saturday in Eastwood Mall to help raise awareness and money for TMM as part of Edward C. Taylor March for Meals Memorial Walk.

Taylor was an advocate for March for Meals before his death in 2013.

TMM was founded in 1970 by the Trumbull County Medical Society Alliance. It is a community-based agency dedicated to providing home-delivered meals to those who are unable to secure or prepare a daily nutritious meal. Meals are delivered Monday to Friday.

Last year, volunteers drove more than 87,000 miles and delivered more than 100,000 meals.
