Opera House to sponsor program about war history

WWII AVIATOR: The Cortland Bazetta Historical Society will hold a program 7 p.m. Thursday at the Opera House in Cortland relating to the story of local aviator Edward Tracey’s experiences during World War II.

His son, Tim Tracey, inherited his father’s war journal and started writing a booklet. As he wrote and researched, he realized the special role his father played while in the military. Young men who went to Canada to become pilots before the United States entered the war were important when the U.S. Army Air Force was formed. They taught new pilots and were leaders in air warfare.

Tim has created a short CD of some of the wartime flights based on his father’s journals. He will also bringing a collection of photos and uniforms.

Parking area is from the north driveway of the Cortland United Methodist Church on High Street.

MOVIE NIGHT: The Trumbull Soil and Water Conservation District will hold a Movie Night series 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Trumbull County Agriculture and Education Center, 520 W. Main St., Cortland. The nature program is free with informational handouts available. Discussion will be on local wildlife.

GINGERBREAD HOUSES: The Mahoning Valley Historical Society will hold the second annual gingerbread house competition with houses to be displayed at the Memories of Christmas Past at the Arms Family Museum. There will be adult and youth categories. A children’s workshop will be held 1 p.m. Saturday and 5 p.m. Tuesday.

The finished houses will be displayed Nov. 14 and 15 at the museum.

COYOTE PROGRAM: The Howland Library Branch will hold a program 6 p.m. today on coyotes, which are found in both urban and rural environments, including in Trumbull County. Amy Reeher of the Trumbull Soil and Water Conservation District will explain some of the history and habits of the creature that inspired a “Wile E.” portrayal.

CONCERT SET: A Veterans Day concert will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at the Tyler History Center, 325 W. Federal St., Youngstown. Tickets are 330-743-2589. The concert is being sponsored by First Energy.
