LaBrae hosts awareness night event

LEAVITTSBURG — Community greatness was the theme of a family awareness night at the LaBrae Local Schools complex for students and parentst.

Amy Frederick, co-chair along with Maggie Adair, said the event showcased the service agencies and organizations available to help families.

“We have speakers and guests who focused on how to have greatness in our community and how we must all take part and be a part of the change,” Frederick said.

“We wanted to bring families in the community together and focus on greatness. We can all work together to make our community better,” she said.

Author David Kohut, addressed more than 60 people. He wrote “Standing in the Presence of Greatness.”

“How many of you want to see this community get better? I want each of you to become a part of the solution, not the problem.”

Kohut said it is his passion to welcome each new day with a positive attitude and wanting to be part of being a change to make thing better.

He said society has changed since he was in school in the 1980s.

“For the first time in history, we have a generation of children who sit down at a computer and learn, and do not have to hear from a human voice. They get information they need to speak, write and process off a computer,” he said.

Kohut said it’s not the children but the choices they make that are worse today. He said when he was in school, he made bad choices, such as not getting good grades, until he began reading books.

He showed pictures from newspapers of when his school had a gun club and students practiced shooting at targets. Today, that has changed, he said.

Kohut said the five important elements of a good relationship are love, trust, self-respect, understanding and forgiveness. He said he would also add accountability.

“Our choices do define us. You have to care. We all deserve a second chance,” said Kohut. “Be active and part of the community. Our life is a sum total of our choices.”
