Fitness center to celebrate 90 years
By BOB COUPLAND
WARREN — Trumbull Family Fitness, formerly the YMCA of Warren, will be marking 90 years of providing fitness and recreational programs to the community.
Paulette Edington, director of TFF, said the anniversary will be marked at the annual dinner set for April 7 at the Hippodrome. Guest speaker is Dennis Blank, who will share information on local history.
“A big focus of the event will be the 90th anniversary. We will have people share their memories of the YMCA,” Edington said.
TFF has always been located in downtown Warren and has seen remodeling and enhancements over the years.
Edington said recent updates include painting the upstairs rooms and repairs made to the hallway. Last year, one of the indoor pools was repaired.
Over the years, the YMCA has changed from a place mostly for men to a place for families with programs offered for children and adults, women and men.
Edington said children attend the new Prevention, Alternative Thinking and Hope (PATH) program Tuesday to Thursday, with activities planned through May.
Children work with a curriculum organized by Valley Counseling, COMPASS, Bigs and Blue of Big Brothers and Sisters of America and Boy Scouts.
In addition to PATH, there is also an after-school program for local children, which will continue into the summer.
Edington said children receive homework help, swim, play chess, enjoy activities in the gym and take racquetball lessons.
Senior citizens are offered a variety of exercise and recreational programs as well, with a special room provided for them.
Swim lessons for adults and children began in February and continue in March. Edington said swim instructor Patricia King is now taking registrations for the March sessions. She said lessons are included with TFF membership.
Register for the annual dinner by calling 330-304-1565 by March 30.
The mission of TFF is to establish and maintain an atmosphere that facilitates physical, emotional and spiritual growth that will enhance the quality of life for individuals and families in the community.
