Project Green implemented at Lakeview
CORTLAND — A Lakeview High School sophomore was able to secure a $500 Disney Be Inspired: Summer of Service grant to start a new recycling program at the school.
Douglas Gurdak, 16, said the grant allowed the school to start Project Green Lakeview, which included purchasing of a large dumpster by the school and several recycling dumpsters that students and staff can use for recyclable items.
Gurdak said teacher Heidi Monroe assisted with the grant application.
The newly formed Project Green student group with the Class of 2020 in the leadership role kicked off the community service project this week.
He said students from Senior Beta Club and other groups emptied the receptacles throughout the school for the first time since they were installed Jan. 3.
”This was a ceremony to start the program. This is the first time the school has had a program like this,” Gurdak said.
The waste was measured and recorded so it can be used to create a report demonstrating how impactful the program is for the environment.
Gurdak said the student-run recycling program was supported by the school administration and school board.
Monroe said bins will be emptied each week with bins in each classroom, offices and in hallways.
The Lakeview Employment Training class students have volunteered to empty the containers as part of their job / career skills unit.
School Superintendent Robert Wilson said the program was a great idea to have in the high school and involve all students and staff.
”When I first heard about this I thought it was a great idea.” said Preston Townsend, a junior.
”It is a step in the right direction,” said Juan Rohrer, a junior.
Blake Gould, a junior, said for the bins to be up for a week and with school not in session every day since Christmas break, there was a lot of items.
”I was surprised how much we collected in such a short time,” he said.
The grant, which was one of 270, was made available from both Be Inspired Disney Citizenship and Youth Service America. Gurdak said the requirement for the grant is it must be used to organize a service project that positively benefits the community.
In December, a group of Lakeview Middle School students traveled to the high school for recycling event where they set up and distributed recycling boxes donated by Geauga-Trumbull Solid Waste Management District.
