Family Fitness receives $45,000 grant

WARREN — Trumbull Family Fitness received a $45,000 grant from the United Way of Trumbull County for a new program to help break down barriers for local school children.

Paulette Edington, executive director of Family Fitness, said the PATH — Prevention, Alternative Thinking, Hope — program aims to help Warren City Schools children to address behavioral issues and stay out of the Trumbull County Juvenile Justice Center.

She said the program for children ages 10 to 15 is in partnership with Valley Counseling and Compass and will be offered at Tuesdays to Thursdays at the fitness center.

Also, an after-school program for local school children will continue through May and then the summer children’s program will run from June to August.

Edington said center has partnered with Mercy Health with a Stepping Out program 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays, with free line dancing. The program also includes free fitness classes 9 a.m. Saturdays.

After work was done to the swimming pool, the swim lesson classes will start again in February.

Edington said in addition to the new plumbing under the indoor pool, other work has included replacing pumps on boiler system, roof work to be finished in the spring, a new chess room designed by a local Boy Scout, and work being done to replace leaks in hallway for the ”Kid’s Zone” area on the second floor.

The hallway is currently being painted and repaired over the holidays as is the ceiling in the same area of the second floor.

”We would like to put in a computer lab for the Kid’s Club program,” she said.

Other goals will be to increase membership, plan for the annual dinner in April and July 4 fundraiser run.

”People coming in can see that the building is changing. We are not just a health and wellness facility but a community center. We want to do and offer all we can to support the community,”Edington said.

Edington said she would also like to see main gymnasium floor on the second floor of the building replaced. She said the floor is the original one from when the building opened.
