Socks are collected for veterans

WARREN — The Trumbull County American Legion Council, with the help of local schools and the community, collected 3,000 pairs of socks for veterans as part of the annual Fill the Box With Socks fundraiser.

Bob Marino, director of the local sock drive with American Legion Post 700 in Warren, said the drive had Warren City Schools, American Legion Post 699, Knights of Columbus and other groups collecting white socks.

They will be delivered to veterans at Wade Park Medical Center, Sandusky Veterans Nursing Home and local nursing homes.

Marino said the idea originated several years ago with Niles resident Sherry Rose.

”This is the fifth year we have done this. We were able to collect new white adult socks in one month,” Stanley Gregory, commander of Trumbull American Legion Council, said.

Marino said socks were brought to the Trumbull County Veteran Services for packaging.

”It was a successful event thanks to the support and donations,” he said.
