BACKPACK PROGRAM: The Newton Falls Community Backpack program has begun its seventh year of serving the needs of children of the elementary and middle schools.
The program was organized by local businesses in 2010 for Make A Difference Day to help bridge the gap over the weekend for those students on free and reduced lunch programs. The program provides them with foods and snacks such as cereal, cereal bars, cheese and crackers, vegetable soup, applesauce and other items. Each bag is packed with 10 to 15 items and given to more than 40 students on a rotating basis. Nearly 275 students who applied for the program are selected by the school nurse.
Donations of items for the program can be dropped off at Healthy Treasurers, Newton Falls United Methodist Church or the Associated Schools Employee Credit Union. Money can also be donated at the ASECU in the account named Newton Falls Community Backpack Program.
