TEAMS NEEDED FOR TOURNAMENT: Youth and adult basketball teams are needed for the seventh annual “This Means War” 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament Oct. 8 to help a Warren mother of two young daughters with her battle against breast cancer.
The double-elimination tournament will begin at 9 a.m. at Southington Chalker High School, 2482 state Route 534 in Southington. Each team can have up to four players on its roster. Only 50 total teams will be accepted. Admission for spectators is free.
The tournament, which is sponsored by Great Lakes Cheese/Adams Reserve and The Hope Center for Cancer Care, will feature an adult division and several youth divisions. Entry fee is $20 per youth player and $25 per adult player. No game-day registration will be accepted.
Youth players also will receive a free tournament T-shirt if they register by Sept. 30.
Division winners will earn prizes ranging from trophies to $120 in gift cards to a $300 cash prize. A team also will win a free large pizza through the tournament’s Best Team Name contest.
The tournament also will feature a half-court shot contest where anyone who makes the shot will earn free steak for a year from Texas Roadhouse in Niles. The cost for each shot is $5 and the contest is open to anyone. No pre-registration is needed.
Net proceeds from the event will benefit breast cancer survivor Alexandria Baker, 27, who faces financial trouble because of the weeks of work she was forced to miss because of her chemotherapy treatments and frequent doctor appointments. Baker is a 2008 Warren G. Harding High School graduate and her daughters attend John F. Kennedy Catholic School Lower Campus.
