YWCA offers career learning

WARREN — Two camps offered this summer for children and teens at the YWCA of Warren have taken local youth to colleges and other locations — allowing them to see different career opportunities.

Camp Discover is held for 10 weeks in the summer to Aug. 11 for children in kindergarten to fifth grade, while girls camps are for girls ages 11 to 14 for five weeks in July and August.

Natalie Vaughn, youth program manager, said Camp Discover is held daily providing activities such as field trips to city hall, parks and library and swimming at Warren G. Harding High School.

“There have been visits from speakers who discuss healthy food choices and nutrition,” she said, noting speakers come from the Ohio State University Extension in Cortland.

Vaughn said the Camp Discover theme is ”Career Exploration” with programs on archaeology and engineering.

The Camp Discover participants recently joined with the girls camp for a trip to Kent State University Trumbull Campus to tour the biology and chemistry programs.

Robin Perez, teen coordinator at YWCA of Warren, said she brings the youth to the college so they can see career opportunities in science and math. She said activities during the summer focus on science, arts, engineering, technology and math.

Dr. Mary Russell, biology and anatomy professor, spoke to the youth about blood and plasma, skeletons and examples of the human body.

Melissa Kuneli, student services at KSU-Trumbull, said the children also visit Dr. Valerie Cubon’s chemistry lab for experiments and activities using chemistry.

Joniah Williamson, 13, said this is her first year in the girls camp.

”I like the activities and college campus visit,” she said. “We saw science labs and learned about the human body.”

Kennedy Lawson, 10, was in the Discovery Camp last year and moved up to the girls camp this year.

Perez said while there is a lot of learning about healthy eating and finances, there is also recreational activities — including swimming and field trips.
