TCTC earns recognition
CHAMPION — Trumbull Career and Technical Center has been named the ”2016 High Schools that Work Top Performing School in Northeast Ohio Region.”
The award was presented recently from the High Schools that Work organization at a TCTC board meeting. The award is based on the performance of the 60 TCTC 2016 graduates who took part in a student survey.
TCTC Director Mary Flint said this year marks 100 years of career and technical education being offered nationally to students.
“We are celebrating the accomplishments of Trumbull Career and Technical Center and its award-winning staff and students. When you look around the building you see the achievements and hardwork and impact in student achievement TCTC has had,” Flint said.
Diana Rogers, executive director of High Schools that Work and Cindy Harris, site coach for High Schools that Work, presented the award.
Flint said the TCTC staff is ”innovative and building a culture of continuous improvements for keeping students actively engaged.”
“The students are actively engaged in real-life applications and work-based learning experiences. We are fortunate to have so many teachers in our staff who put in many hours beyond their work days to prepare high-quality educational experiences for the students,” Flint said.
TCTC Superintendent Jason Gray said the presentation was based on a survey of staff and students on what the school is offering to students.
“This is another milestone for TCTC,” Gray said.
Rogers said the TCTC staff is working very hard to provide a ”culture of high expectations.”
“This school is so deserving of this recognition with the high performing expectations of the staff and students,” said Rogers, who indicated the survey that was taken of 12th graders in 16 states.
She said TCTC scored above national averages in the categories of literacy, quality technical education, academics / career guidance extra help and integrating academics in career/ technical classrooms.
Survey results indicate that TCTC students are engaged in challenging academic and career tech programming. It is also indicated that students are college and career ready from the education they receive at TCTC. The center also helps students in making the transition from high school to adulthood.
TCTC has been recognized numerous times in the past for outstanding performance and continues to be among the top performing HSTW schools, Rogers said.
In addition to the 60 TCTC students who took the survey, nationwide 24,221 students in 16 states were involved.
Rogers said TCTC is graduating students ready to be enrolled, employed or enlisted.
”Our survey data is a strong indicator that TCTC students recognize the opportunities available to them to be both college and career ready. They have the potential to earn earn industry credentials, enroll in dual enrollment classes, and earn college credit while in high school. These options save them both time and money after graduation,” Flint said.
Gray said the school has shown what can be accomplished to raise student achievement
”The school illustrates the spirit of change that HSTW advocates resulting in improved student achievement and graduation rates,” he said.
