Effort to form Howland Lions Club

HOWLAND — An effort has begun to form a Howland Township Lions Club to provide service to the community.

A meeting has been set 6:30 p.m. March 8 at Shepherd of the Valley’s chapel room, 4100 N. River Road.

Bob Whited, a member of the Austintown Lions Club and a past district governor for the organization, said Howland has never had a Lions Club.

”Eighteen years ago we tried to get one started and it fell through. My experience in getting new clubs started is to go by the population,” he said.

Whited said with Howland having a population of 19,000, he believes there are enough people who will want to get involved. He said 20 people are needed to establish the local club, which would begin a one- to two-year charter process.

He said Howland does have a Rotary Club, which does a lot of service in different areas and ways than a Lions Club. The Lions Club would focus on eyeglasses, pilot dogs and vision screenings.

”The group would help in the community and generate funds for visioncare and eyeglasses for people and also help the fire and police departments,” Whited said.

Men and women interested in learning about Lions and the role it will have in the community of Howland should attend the meeting.

If established, Howland would be the seventh club Whited and others have started.

”This is a service club, not a social club. We will address ways to help those with sight impairment,” Whited said.

The national Lions are in their 100th year of service.

Lions Clubs International has 1.4 million members performing service in 210 countries

Lion Clubs are involved in projects that protect the environment such as planting trees and recycling, hands-on community service such as remodeling a non-profit community center, painting a shelter for the homeless or repairing a public park or playground. They also help children with hearing and vision screenings and awareness, securing wheelchairs for the disabled and supporting nutritional programs.
