Bridge building contest at YSU

BRIDGE BUILDERS AT YSU: The Mahoning Valley miniature bridge building competition will be held 8 a.m to 2:30 p.m. Friday in the Chestnut Room of the Kilcawley Center, Youngstown State University.

Local high school teams from Mahoning and Trumbull counties will design and build balsa wood bridges, then test their strength by adding loads until they break. The winning bridge will be chosen based on meeting the design criteria and the most efficient load-carrying-capacity-to-structure-weight ratio. Prizes will be awarded to the winning teams.

The goal of the competition is to promote civil engineering as a career choice and to provide students with an educational opportunity to apply their knowledge.

COMMUNITY FORUM: Friendship Baptist Church, 1954 Brier St. SE, Warren, will hold a Church and Community Conversation Forum 6 p.m. Feb. 28 with the residents of the 4th and 5th wards and current council representatives and candidates seeking election to those positions.

HOME AND GARDEN SHOW: The Home Builders and Remodelers Association of the Valley will host its 66th annual Home and Garden Show noon to 8 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at Mr. Anthony’s on South Avenue in Boardman. Admission is free.

STEM STORYTIME: The OH WOW! The Roger and Gloria Jones Children’s Center for Science & Technology 11 W. Federal St., Youngstown, will hold STEM Storytime 10 a.m. Saturday for children 5 and younger. Children will work with Inspireworks staff for activities. Call 330-744-5914 for information.

A microscope mayhem program will be held noon to 2 p.m. Saturday for children of all ages to explore and view materials under high-powered microscopes.
