Girard Historical Society hears from author

GIRARD — Wanting to share tidbits of Youngstown’s history, local historian Sean Posey compiled a book, ”Lost Youngstown,” that he shared with members of the Girard Historical Society at a recent meeting.

Posey shared his motivation for the first book and told the group he is now working on a second book that also focuses on the Mahoning Valley’s history.

“I wanted to share the historical occurrences of Youngstown’s urban history and not just the local ties, but the national connections as well,” Posey said.

“The ‘Lost Youngstown’ book  is about things people did not know about and may no longer be there such as Idora Park, the Elms Ballroom and the neighborhood theaters,”  Posey said.

He said he was able to learn a lot through his historical research and as a professor at a local community college.

The Youngstown native  is also a photographer and activist. He is a graduate of the photography program at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. He also holds a master’s degree in history from Youngstown State University.

Posey is an adjunct professor at Eastern Gateway Community College.

The book, which was published this year, is available at Amazon and Barnes and Noble.

His second book is about the historical theaters of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley  from the Warner Brothers Theater  to the local drive-ins and movie theaters in downtown Youngstown.

Posey also is scheduled to speak 10 a.m. Saturday at the William Holmes McGuffey Historical Society’s ”Memories of a Lifetime” series at Kravitz’s Deli, 3135 Belmont Ave., Liberty.

The Girard Historical Society also will be open 1 to 5 p.m. today at the Barnhisel House with each room of the historic home decorated with toys and Christmas trees.
