Fundraiser to aid burned boy

JESSE COOMBS BENEFIT: Cortland Christian Church, 153 Grove Drive, is hosting a fundraiser with basket and 50 / 50 raffles for Jesse Coombs, a 6-year-old Lakeview Elementary School student who suffered burns at a Halloween party Oct. 29. He is recovering from second- and third-degree burns. Proceeds will help with medical expenses.

The fundraiser will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Pre-sale tickets are available at Ron’s Barber Shop in Cortland, Image’ry Salon in Warren, Platt Insurance Group in Cortland and Cortland Lanes. For information, call Amy at 330-718-4645. Tickets will also be sold at the door, and winners need not be present. Donations may be made in the name of Julie Coffey, Jesse’s mother.

FIREMEN’S BOOT DRIVE HELPS HOSPITAL: Six area fire departments participated in the annual Handel’s Koins for Kids Firemen’s Boot Drive to benefit Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley. The campaign raised more than $230,000 for Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley.

The campaign is made up of the Firemen’s Boot Drive, corporate partners and local schools collecting coins throughout the busy holiday season to help local children in need. The school portion of the campaign begins the first week of December and goes through Dec. 9.

Fire departments from Austintown, Boardman, Youngstown, Struthers, Canfied and Warren participated.

CRASH CHALLENGE: The YWCA of Youngstown and Oakhill Collaborative will hold a ”Technovation Challenge” Crash Day 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday for girls in grades seven to 12 at the YWCA, 25 W. Rayen Ave. Participants will learn about using apps and developing software.

HELPING VETERANS: Local restaurants are providing discounts to veterans for Veterans Day.

At Bob Evans Restaurants, veterans and active-duty military personnel can eat select menu items for free Saturday to Dec. 31. Veterans and active-duty military personnel get 10 percent off dine-in or carry-out purchases.

Denny’s Restaurants are inviting active, inactive and retired military personnel to stop by for a free Build Your Own Grand Slam 5 a.m. to noon Friday with a valid military ID.

Olive Garden will provide active-duty military and military veterans a free entree from select menu items Friday.

Longhorn Steakhouse will provide free appetizer or dessert Friday to anyone showing proof of military service. All guests get 10 percent off Friday.

Sunrise Inn will provide a free meal to all veterans and active-duty military today and Friday. A valid ID must be presented.
