KINSMAN VFD 90th YEAR: The Kinsman Volunteer Fire Department will celebrate its 90th anniversary on Aug. 6, starting with a parade at 11 a.m. beginning at the town square and proceeding to the fire hall on Ridge Road. The bicycle-decorating contest will be judged at the end of the parade. A service for deceased firefighters will be held at the flagpole.

At 1 p.m., there will be a community picnic. There will be a pet parade and old-fashioned games such as sack races, three-legged races and guess the number of pieces of candy in the jar.

A Chinese auction will feature more than 100 baskets and gift cards. There will also be a kids’ Chinese auction. Drawings will start after 3 p.m. Winners need not be present.

ALUMNI FUNDRAISER A SUCCESS: The Champion Alumni Association completed their Golf Package Scholarship Fundraiser in July, raising more than $1,000.

Association President Russ Cheredar, and her husband, Gene, who secured the donations of golf packages from the many golf course sponsors. The winners of this year’s packages were Jim Stear, Dwayne Sindledecker, Beth Ernest, Bob Snyder, Adam Vasbinder, Dennis Switzer, Tom Trimbur, Mark Adair, Tony Vitale, Chuck Ulam and Jim Shaftic.

Snyder, class of 1966, donated his 30 day membership at Old Dutch to the Champion High School boys and girls golf teams for practice time.

CAR CLUB CAR SHOW: The Mahoning Valley Olde Car Club hosts a Car Cruise from 5 to 9 p.m. every Tuesday in the summer at the Austintown Senior Center. Hours are 5 to 0 p.m., depending on the weather. Proceeds benefit Hospice of the Valley.

The big car show will be Aug. 7 at Boardman Park. The show will include food, raffle, auction, music, booths and a flea market. Proceeds will benefit 14-year-old Abby Lipinski of Boardman, who has cancer.

SHEPHERD COLLECTS SOCKS: During the month of July, Shepherd of the Valley is holding its first Stars and Stripes Sock Drive to benefit local veterans. The collected socks will be given to the Trumbull County Council of the American Legion to distribute to veteran men and women in local nursing facilities and Veteran Clinics.

White cotton men’s and women’s socks can be dropped off at any Shepherd of the Valley community between 8:30 a.m. and 8 p.m. daily. Drop-off hours for the corporate offices are 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

BEATTY NAMED FELLOW: Paul C. Beatty has been named a Fellow of the American Statistical Association (ASA), the nation’s pre-eminent professional statistical society, announced ASA President Jessica Utts.

Beatty is a 1984 graduate of Howland High School, and received B.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Michigan. He is Chief of the Center for Survey Measurement at the U.S. Census Bureau.

To be recognized as an ASA Fellow, honorees must make outstanding professional contributions to and have exhibited leadership in the field of statistical science. Beatty was honored for innovative research on quality of survey data, enhancement of health care statistics in the U.S., and extensive professional service. Beatty will be awarded a certificate at a ceremony Aug. 2 at the 2016 Joint Statistical Meetings (JSM 2016) in Chicago.

FUND ESTABLISHED: The Richard McGrath Jr. Fund has been established by the Mikeyfied Fund and has received donations from the Trumbull County commissioners, which was money raised from ”Dress Down Days” where employees would pay $1 to wear jeans to work. The Mikeyfied Fund matched the donation. The fund was established in memory of McGrath, who worked for the Trumbull County Sheriff’s Department and died suddenly earlier this year.

PINK RIBBON CLASSIC: The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will be held at the Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 18. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. The 18-hole, four-person scramble will be followed by lunch and a Chinese auction and raffle. AMERIPRISE HELPS FEED VALLEY: Ameriprise Financial advisors, employees and clients recently came together to help feed Mahoning Valley families. Organized by Shortreed & Associates, 13 people volunteered at Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley sorting and repackaging bulk food items. Donations totaling over $2,300, raised through client contributions and advisor match, were also presented to the Food Bank This effort is focused on helping the 48.1 million Americans, including over 15 million children and nearly 7 million seniors, who face hunger in the U.S.

The event is part of the semiannual national days of service arranged by Ameriprise in partnership with Feeding America, the nation’s largest hunger-relief organization. On June 17, 4,300 Ameriprise financial advisors, employees and clients spent the day participating in over 250 events across 44 states.

BIKE RUN AND FESTIVAL: West Side Cats fifth annual Bike Run and Summer Festival is being held July 17 at the Austintown Township Park, 6000 Kirk Road in Austintown.

Registration is 9 a.m. with the first bike out at 10 a.m. All Motorcycles Welcome.

The Bike Show will be 1 to 5 p.m. with nine categories and 21 Trophies to present. There will also be door prizes, Chinese raffle, 50/50 raffle and a prize for the best poker hand. Food and Refreshments available.

FREEDOM WARRIOR GOLF OUTING: The Youngstown Air Reserve Base Community Council’s YARBCC Charitable Fund and Avalon Golf & Country Club announces that the third Annual Freedom Warrior Golf Outing will take place on July 13, 2016 at all three of the Avalon Golf & Country Club golf courses including Avalon Lakes, Squaw Creek and Avalon at Buhl. This TriAvalon Extravaganza is a four person scramble that begins at 10 a.m. and includes breakfast, lunch, dinner as well as an adult only evening gala event at Squaw Creek. Jim Tressel is the 2016 Honorary Chairman. Challenge coins will be provided to all golf participants in his honor.

All proceeds will be used to help disabled and disadvantaged veterans from the Mahoning and Shenango Valleys with both basic and special needs as well as the emergency needs of our local military members. The YARBCC Charitable Fund is a 501 C (3), so donations are tax deductible. All monies stay local as the organization is not affiliated with any national non-profit.

The evening gala will include heavy hors d’oeuvres, open bar, live music by Rudy and The Professionals, a silent auction and raffles, ending with a huge fireworks display provided by Phantom Fireworks and Youngstown Phantoms. The gala is open to the public so non-golfers are welcome. The evening event is casual attire.
