New School to host exhibition

WARREN – The New School, a progressive university in New York City, has returned to Warren to present “Designing New Live-Work Spaces: Redesigning the Housing of the Garden District Neighborhood in Warren, Ohio” from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Trumbull Art Gallery’s “The Short Cut Gallery,”141 W. Market St.

Trumbull Neighborhood Partnership Executive Director Matt Martin said the event, a partnership with the Trumbull Art Gallery and the Fine Arts Council of Trumbull County, is free to the public.

Martin said the work on exhibit is the outcome of a collaborative project between The New School and TNP. The work applies the tools of community development finance, grassroots development, and art and design strategies to revitalize abandoned housing in Warren.

Also included in the exhibition are recent photographs by DeShawn Scott, a local artist commissioned by TNP to document the creation of a mural in Warren’s Garden District.

Martin said this year’s design work explores new ways of living and working in small cities, with a focus on re-envisioning abandoned domestic structures in Warren’s Garden District.

“The New School brings a tremendous level of energy, talent, and skill to their work and they always balance an academic approach with a grass-roots level of realism that makes their effort invaluable to us as we seek to revitalize the neighborhoods of Warren,” said Martin.

TNP is a nonprofit community development corporation serving Warren.
