LaBrae students going to state

LEAVITTSBURG – For the second year in a row, LaBrae High School Envirothon students won the Northeast Ohio Envirothon competition, held April 28 in Stark County. They advance to the state level.

Kelly Hardval, education coordinator at Trumbull Soil and Water Conservation District, said LaBrae’s first-place team of five students will compete June 13 and 14 in the State Envirothon at Bowling Green State University.

She said a second team from LaBrae placed fifth in the annual outdoor environmental competition, making them an alternate to the later state competition.

Advised by biology teacher Craig Klotzbach, the LaBrae teams competed against 46 other teams. Team A received awards for the highest scores at the forestry and wildlife ecostations while earning the overall championship.

Members of this team are Maddie Cope, Caleb Hineman, Joey Jaros, Alexus Nubani and Tessa Smith.

LaBrae’s other team was Casey Dean, Allison Middleton, Kaylie Klotzbach, Ethan Stishan and Alexis Wilson.

Hardval said the purpose of the Envirothon is to increase high school students’ awareness and interest in the environment, natural resources and conservation.

This year’s current environmental issue is “Invasive Species, A Challenge to the Environment, Economy and Society.” During the competition, students are required to do a group presentation addressing a particular environmental scenario along with the ecostation tests.

The winning Ohio team will be eligible to participate in the North American Envirothon July 14 at Trent University in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada.
