Historical Society focuses on community

HARTFORD – Members of the Hartford Historical Society have been spending the past several months working on the histories of different sections of the community.

Chris Klingmier, vice president of the society, said members have been compiling information on different sections and seeing what is already known or new about the Burghill area, the township center, Orangeville and the crossroads area.

”We are looking up past stories and facts and whatever we find about these different locations in the community,” Klingmier said.

He said the historical society started 16 years ago after the township’s bicentennial in 1999 because of an interest from local residents about the history.

The group meets 7 p.m. the last Monday of the month at the township fire hall meets except May to July and December.

Klingmier said a few books have been compiled on the township’s history with information from three generations.

“It would be worthwhile for us to familiarize ourselves with what is already compiled. The collective memory of the township is disappearing as we speak. We need to get that information,” he said.

The society will plan different events during the year, including guest speakers at meetings and also takes part in community events such as Hartford Apple Fest and the township’s annual tree lighting.

Society president Helen Burns said the society this month was involved with the Holidays in Hartford community program.

”We like to be part of the community and share what the society has about the local histories,” she said.

The public is welcome to attend a meeting if they have information they would like to share or contribute about parts of the township. The next meeting is Feb. 29.
