PIZZA CHALLENGE BENEFITS CHARITIES: The Slice of the Valley second annual Valley Pizza Challenge, which will help support local children and families, veterans and public safety, is being planned for 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Jan. 16 at St. Demetrios Community Center, 3223 Atlantic St. NE, Warren. The first fundraiser attracted more than 1,000 people.

Proceeds will benefit the Warren Family Mission Women’s and Children’s Facility, transportation for Warren-area military veterans to the Therapeutic Riding Center in Louisville for rehabilitation, and the K-9 Corps at the Warren Police Department.

Profits from the first pizza challenge went to a new playground, building improvements and park cleanup in Warren.

Celebrity judges include Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini and former Cleveland Browns running back Greg Pruitt. There will be pizza eating contest, Chinese and silent auction, music and 50-50 raffle. For information, call 800-323-3547.

BOAR’S HEAD EVENT MARKS 55 YEARS: St. John’s Episcopal Church, 323 Wick Ave., Youngstown, will hold the 55th annual Boar’s Head and Yule Log Festival, with performances at 1:30 and 4 p.m.

BRUNO GROENING FILM: The Circle for Spiritual Aid to Life Inc. will present the documentary film “The Phenomenon Bruno Groening – On The Tracks of the Miracle Healer” noon to 6 p.m. Jan. 24 at The Georgeanna Parker Center at the Boardman Park, 375 Boardman Poland Road. Admission is free and donations are accepted.

ORCHESTRA OFFERS PROGRAM: The Warren Philharmonic Orchestra is offering free violin lessons to a select group of Trumbull County third- through seventh-graders. The application deadline is Jan. 4 for the next class of students, beginning Jan. 24.

An application form and related documents are available to download from the WPO website or can be requested from the WPO office. The orchestra will loan each Strings of Joy student an age-appropriate violin and provide individual, 20-minute lessons Sunday afternoons through June. Occasional group lessons will be scheduled, as well. The orchestra will provide printed music to the students at no cost.

The lessons will be held at the WPO offices, 174 N. Park Ave., second floor in Warren. Lesson instructors will be professional musicians from the region. Parents / guardians must be willing to provide transportation for the lessons, provide encouragement and practice space and assume ultimate responsibility for the instrument.
