School supply giveaway set
OUTREACH PLANS SUPPLY GIVEAWAY: St. Nicholas Samaritan Outreach, in cooperation with the Newton Falls American Legion, will hold a free school supply giveaway, while supplies last, from 3 to 4 p.m. Aug. 3 at the American Legion, 2025 E. River Road. Children must be present.
CENTER NEEDS ITEMS: The Emmanuel Community Care Center in Girard will distribute school supplies to children in grades kindergarten to 12 whose families are registered at the center. The distribution is being planned for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 15. To contact the center, call 330-545-4301 through Aug. 8. Anyone who is interested in donating school supplies should bring items to the center by Aug. 8. Local churches have drop-off boxes for supplies including St. Rose Parish rectory.
EXCHANGE PROGRAM SEEKS PARTICIPANTS: Local families are being asked to share “your America” with a high school exchange student from one of 70 countries during the upcoming school year, through the Pax Program of Academic Exchange. Students ages 15 to 18 arrive in the United States in August. Volunteer host families provide Pax students with a place to stay, eat and study in a supportive home environment. TCAP RECEIVES GRANT: Trumbull Community Action Program (TCAP) was awarded a $10,000 grant by the William Swanston Charitable Fund in support of its Fit Town project. Fit Town is designed for preschool-age children and their families and is characterized by daily physical activities and real-life scenarios of nutrition-related activities. Funding will provide indoor and outdoor physical activity equipment. Fit Town combines the expertise of health professionals and students from the Trumbull County Health Department, Youngstown State University and Head Start’s physical activity instructor and dietitian to ensure the optimal delivery of evidence-based health and fitness messages and activities. GOLF CLASSIC TO HELP HOSPITAL: The fourth annual Clubs for Kids Golf Classic to benefit Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley will be held Friday at the Youngstown Country Club. Registration and lunch will begin at 11 a.m. and the golf tournament will begin at noon. The event will conclude with a cocktail reception, dinner, presentation of prizes and a silent auction. The Clubs for Kids Golf Classic, which has become one of the premiere golf events in the area, has raised more than $150,000 in the past three years for Akron Children’s local programs and services. Prior to the event, The Clubs for Kids Youth Clinic, sponsored by the Tod Family Foundation, will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. It will feature three stations for young golfers. SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY: With the closing of St. Stephen School in Niles and IHM/St. Joseph School in Austintown, the Cafaro Foundation is offering a one-year, $1,000 scholarship to any student from those schools who wishes to enroll at St. Rose School in Girard. The scholarship is available to as many students from the closed schools who wish to attend St. Rose, with no other restrictions.
