OSU Extension celebrates 100 years
CORTLAND – The Ohio State University Extension Office in Trumbull County is marking its 100th anniversary this year.
Members of the extension office who work from the Trumbull County Agriculture Center in Cortland took part in the Family Garden Night held at the center and gardens, where they had displays set up showcasing the program and services provided by the extension office.
Marie Economos, an extension educator, said different events are being planned for the 100th anniversary.
The annual “School to Farm Road Trip” will be held next week in Trumbull and Ashtabula Counties in Ohio. The trip, organized by Ohio State University Extension, was developed to help school service personnel and school administration see how they can increase the use of local agricultural products (vegetables, fruits, meats) in their school lunch program farm fresh salad bars and at fundraisers and special events.
In past years, more than 30 individuals took part in this event, including teachers, food service directors, school administrators, representatives from state legislators’ offices and local farmers. During the day, the group will visit a variety of farms in Trumbull and Ashtabula counties to learn how schools can make the connection to local farms.
The extension centennial will be recognized during the Ohio State Fair July 23 to Aug. 3, Celebration of Youth sponsored by the Ohio 4-H Foundation on Sept. 20, The Ohio State University homecoming game on Oct. 18, and other activities.
In May 1914, the Smith-Lever Act was signed which established the Cooperative Extension Service. The act requires cooperations between county, state and federal governments and encourages priorities to be established locally to meet the needs of each county.
The Smith-Lever Act has stimulated innovative research and educational programs for youth and adults that have improved lives and shaped a nation.
Programs at the extension office focus on strengthening families and communities, preparing youth for success, enhancing agriculture and the environment and advancing employment and income opportunities.
The OSU Extension is the outreach arm of the College of Food, Agriculture and Environmental Sciences at the Ohio State University.
