ROTARY RECOGNIZES GARDNER: The Warren Rotary Club recently recognized Roger H. Gardner, post commander for American Legion Post 540, with the Les Stauffer Community Award at the Rotary’s President’s Night held at DiLucia’s Banquet Center in Warren.
The award, named in memory of Stauffer, a 50-year Rotarian, recognizes a long involvement in service to the Warren community and can only be awarded to a non-Rotarian.
In 1986, after more than 36 years in the Army/ Army National Guard, Gardner retired and became very active in the American Legion, which he had joined in 1956. In 1997, he became the post commander for American Legion Post 540. Under his direction, Post 540 has provided an honor guard to more than 2,500 military funerals in Trumbull and Mahoning counties, a color guard to over 36 ceremonies each year, color guard to lead seven parades every year in Trumbull County, places flags on veterans’ graves in six cemeteries in Warren, Cortland and Bazetta, holds six to eight Tell America programs in area schools and travels to the Cleveland Veterans Hospital for bingo games for hospitalized vets.
Gardner has logged 2,300 volunteer hours for the Warren Community Clinic and 6,800 hours with the Youngstgwon VA Clinic Volunteer Service.
The Warren Rotary Club meets at noon every Wednesday at Enzo’s Restaurant in Warren.
RETREADS MEET TODAY: The Mahoning Valley Retreads, a group of motorcyclists, will meet for breakfast at 10 a.m. today at Denny’s Restaurant, 4927 Mahoning Ave., Austintown. Meeting will follow. Membership is open to all bikers. There are yearly dues. Further information concerning membership and the summer ride schedule may be obtained by calling Charlie at 234-567-4001.
GARDEN CLUB FLOWER SHOW PLANNED: The Friendly Garden Club Annual Flower Show will be held from noon to 3:30 p.m. July 19, at Kinsman Presbyterian Church. Free and open to the public.
If you would like to enter an arrangement or horticulture specimen, bring it to the church between 8 and 10 a.m. You do not have to be a member to enter. The theme for the flower show is “Wizard of Oz.”

DANCE DATE CHANGED: Please note the last minute change in schedule for USA Dance’s July dance, which is usually held on the third Sunday of the month. This year our July dance will be the fourth Sunday – July 27 – to accommodate and support the Ohio Chapters Dance at Kent State. This change will also take place in October, moving the October dance to Oct. 26.
Dance on July 27 at the Orthodox Center, 1025 N. Belle Vista Ave., Youngstown. The evening will feature Basics for Beginners at 5 p.m., Bolero lesson sponsored by Studio One, and open dancing to ballroom, Latin, swing and hustle from 6:15 to 9 p.m.
