Girard to host Special Olympics
SPECIAL OLYMPICS SET FOR GIRARD: Six counties and two states will be represented at the Special Olympics Track and Field Meet Saturday at Girard’s Arrowhead Stadium.
The opening ceremonies will begin at 10 a.m., with events and awards taking place until 9 p.m. There will be nine teams from Ashtabula, Columbiana, Mahoning, Portage and Trumbull counties in Ohio, and Butler County in Pennsylvania, and more than 300 athletes participating in the games.
The Girard City School District, the Girard-Liberty Rotary Club, and Fairhaven School, along with the help of many area companies and businesses, have worked in partnership to make this event possible. More than 200 volunteers from the Girard City Schools and area community service groups and businesses will serve as volunteers that day.
HEART DAY FOR WOMEN: Woman’s Heart Day, a free health and wellness extravaganza provided as a service to the community by Humility of Mary Health Partners will be held from 6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday at the Covelli Centre, Youngstown. There will be free health screenings, fitness demonstrations, educational presentations on a wide range of health issues.
PLANT EXCHANGE: The Newton Falls plant exchange will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at the pavilion in the city park off Center street. There will be vendors from the Animal Welfare League of Trumbull County. Call Susan at 330-718-3469.
There will be live music, with those attending to bring lawn chairs.
PRODUCE GIVEAWAY: The Warren Family Mission will hold a produce giveaway from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. today while supplies last at the mission, 361 Elm Road, Warren. Identification is required. Those needing items are asked to bring a bag or box.
CLEANUP PLANNED: West Farmington Village will hold a community cleanup and tire collection from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Main Street (state Route 88).
INVENTIONS FOR KIDS: OH?WOW!?The Roger and Gloria Jones Children’s Center for Science and Technology, 11 W. Federal St., Youngstown, will hold an Invention Convention from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. today, during which children can investigate past and present inventions and brainstorm future inventions.
