FIRST team wins championships

WARREN – Warren G. Harding Robotics FIRST Team 48, Delphi ELITE team has won the state robotics championship for the second year in a row.

The team recently traveled to Dayton along with 23 other teams for the Ohio FIRST Robotics Competition State Championship to defend their 2013 State championship title.

This year’s robotics competition involved robots shooting a huge medicine ball into a score zone.

Aaron Schwab, Team 48 mentor, said the top 24 teams in the state, based on their regular season results, were invited to participate in the event.

“Team 48 was ranked 17th going into the event, and we were selected as the first pick in the draft by the No. 1 seed. We were partnered with FRC Team 695 (The First Responders) from Beachwood and FRC Team 5146 (The Rusty Knights) from Hebron for the elimination rounds.

“After a few very close matches, Team 48 and the first-seeded Alliance advanced through the quarterfinals, the semifinals and the finals to win the state championship,” Schwab said.

He said each round of the elimination rounds are best of three. After winning the first finals match and losing a very close second match, the third match was winner-take-all. The third match was back and forth until the end when Team 48 managed to block two last-minute shots to secure the win, Schwab said.

Team members said no other team has won back-to-back state championships.

There are 43 students on the Warren G. Harding robotics team. That is the largest team in the history of the club, which has continued to grow since its inception 16 years ago.

Schwab said videos were taken of the winning final matches and are ready to be released for broadcast available at
