Writing contest winners named

COMMEMORATION EVENT: The 21st annual Holocaust commemoration event will be held at noon Tuesday at the Mahoning County Courthouse rotunda. The event will feature the recognition of the winners of the Jewish Community Relations Council’s annual student Holocaust writing contest and the presentation of the a proclamation by Youngstown Mayor John McNally. There will also be a memorial candlelighting ceremony to honor the 6 million who perished.

ART SHOWCASED: The Bristol Local Schools art show will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the school’s gymnasium. The event will showcase students’ work in all grades.

SHERLOCK HOLMES FILM: The Warren-Trumbull County Public Library will show “Sherlock Holmes; 114 Years of Movie Mystery” from 2 to 4 p.m. May 3 and 10 at the main library, 444 Main Ave., Warren.

The event will include short films and classics celebrating the fictional detective. Donald Novorsky, a member of the Baker Street Irregulars, will provide commentary and discussion.

CLEANUP PLANNED: The Friends of Mosquito Lake State Park Inc. will hold a Helping Hands cleanup day from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Mosquito Lake State Park.

Check-in begins at 7:30 a.m. at the campground check-in station off Bazetta Road. Individuals or groups who can donate time to the cleanup will be entitled to camp free during the week but need to call 330-360-1862 or 330-979-1948.

Scout troops, organizations or individuals needing to accumulate required public service hours can take part. Those who can help are asked to bring rakes, shovels, wheelbarrows. Lunch will be served to all volunteers at 1 p.m.
