World Book Night offers free books
WARREN Local volunteers will be helping to get free books into the hands of area residents as part of the upcoming World Book Day planned for April 23.
The nationwide effort is to get free books handed out across the nation.
Jean Bolinger of Cortland, a retired book store owner, said she will be among the volunteers helping with the local effort.
“It is an ambitious campaign to encourage reading. There are 25,000 volunteers who will give specially printed books to those who may not have the means or access to obtain them on their own,” she said.
Bolinger said book volunteers are scheduled to meet from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at a reception at the Warren-Trumbull County Public Library.
She said each volunteer is scheduled to give away 20 books on World Book Night.
“This will give everyone a chance to meet one another and share plans,” Bolinger said.
She said volunteers can stop at the library anytime today through April 23 for materials and other items.
An independent panel of booksellers and librarians selects the titles for the spring giveaway which is celebrated on Shakespeare’s birthday, April 23. The authors waive their royalties and the publishers agree to print special not-for-sale editions of the books.
Volunteers who are selected get to choose which of the titles they will give away and local libraries receive the mass quantities of books for the volunteers in their area.
The list of books available for distribution is the most diverse in the three-year history of WBN – 35 titles representing many genres and age-group interests. Each volunteer receives 20 copies of the book he or she selects.
“As a longtime lover of books I became a volunteer. The book I chose to give away is one I reviewed a couple of years ago, “The Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet” by Jamie Ford. I will be giving my books to the women who live at Beatitude House in Warren, hoping to excite them about a lovely book that would make a great subject for a discussion group,” Bolinger said.
