Program to focus on war medicine
LIBRARY TO HOLD CIVIL WAR PROGRAM: The Warren-Trumbull County Public Library will host a free program about medical advancements of the Civil War at 2 p.m. Sunday at the main library, 444 Mahoning Ave. N.W., Warren.
Peter D’Onofrio, president of the Society of Civil War Surgeons, will explain the advances and their impact on the subsequent development of American medicine. D’Onofrio will be dressed in period military uniform and portray Robert Nelson Barr, who was the 4th Surgeon General for the Ohio during the Civil War.
He will speak to the audience as if they are the County Soldiers’ Aid Society, and the time period will be one year after the end of the war.
The Civil War was the first modern war and resulted in the highest number of U.S. casualties per capita of any U.S. wars. Approximately 620,000 men perished, including 360,000 in the North and 260,000 in the South.
