Rotary honors safety forces

HOWLAND – Wanting to show its appreciation to safety forces and schools, the Howland Rotary Club held its annual fundraiser meal and basket raffle at Howland High School. The club made four $500 check presentations.

Receiving $500 at “A Tribute to Safety Forces” were the Howland Police Department, Howland Fire Department, Howland Community Scholarship Foundation and the Howland Interact Club for the American Cancer Society. The donations recognized the service and work each group does for the community.

David Snyder, president of Howland Rotary, said this is the 37th year for the fundraiser which is one of the main events hosted each year by the group.

He said Rotary emphasizes community service and international action focusing on integrity.

Snyder said the Rotary also sponsors the Interact Club and made a commitment to its adviser Andrea Ferenac that if she took part in the Polar Plunge at Lake Milton, they would donate to the American Cancer Society.

”That challenge was met,” Snyder said.

Matt Headland, Interact Club president, said the fundraiser, which included music and a dinner, is a favorite of his and other Interact members.

The Howland Interact Club started five years ago with 20 members and has grown to more than 230 students.

“This joint event gives us a great opportunity for the Interact Club to interact and relate with the Rotarians,” Headland said.

Snyder said the Rotarians also like to meet with the Interact Club and has them attend their weekly meetings.

Ferenac said she appreciates the support for Rotary.

“When you are part of the community I believe in a two-way street. You give and you give back. We help them and they help us. It is a very special commitment,” she said.

Dennis Lewis, vice president of the Howland Community Scholarship Foundation, said scholarships are presented each year to graduating seniors.

Snyder said this is the eighth year the Rotary has contributed to the foundation.

“We are proud to support the scholarship fund. In the eight years of its existence, we have sponsored a scholarship,” Snyder said,

Lt. Lance Blair of the fire department said their $500 will be used for purchasing smoke detectors, while Patrolman Brian Butto said the police department will use the $500 for cameras for accident scenes and processing of crime scenes.
