CIVIC LEAGUE SPONSORS DISCUSSION: The 1964 Civil Rights Act will be the subject of a panel discussion sponsored by the Warren Civic League at 4 p.m. Sunday at Grace AME Church, 1137 Main Ave. S.W., Warren. The theme for the free event is “Celebrating Women’s History: 50 Years after the Civil Rights Act.”

The Warren Civic League is celebrating and honoring African-American women and civil rights legends who took a stand for equality in their careers and occupations. They will share their experiences and how they stood up for their beliefs.

The event will feature the Honorable Benita Pearson as moderator. Judge Pearson was appointed to serve as United States District Judge for the Northern District of Ohio by President Barack Obama, making her the first African-American female to serve as a U.S. District Judge in the state of Ohio.

The panel will discuss what can be done to make sure the 1964 Civil Rights Act is a continued success. Panelists will be Edwina Whitehead (education), the Rev. Georgina Thornton (religion), Cheryl Sadler, PhD (medical), Anna Biggins (Labor Movement), Sarah Brown Clark (former College Professor), Gloria Duren-Gee (Business), Dalphne Baldwin (public service), Helen Rucker (elected official) and Madonna Pinkard (journalism)

The Warren Civic League Women History Program Committee chairperson is Edna Douglas and committee members are Diane Franklin, Dalzia Swanson, Linda Smith and Brenda Spencer. Jacci Johnson is the president of the Warren Civic League.

CHAMPION SOC GROUP HOLD MEETING: Champion Presbyterian SOC group will hold its monthly meeting at noon April 7. There will be a catered luncheon for which those attending are asked to cover the costs. This will be a meeting with Rod Truman of Thru it All Ministries presenting “Common Garments.”

Truman is a retired basketball coach who tells his uplifting and encouraging story.

The Ladies Aid Society will be recognized also at this meeting for its 100th anniversary (1914-2014).

SOCIETY ACCEPTING RESERVATIONS: The reservation deadline for the Bristol HIstorical Society’s bus trip to Pennsylvania Dutch Country in June, is April 4 by contacting Tour Leader Wendell Lauth at 330-889-2555.

Featured on the June 16 through 18 tour is the Sight and Sound Theatre production of “Moses” at their 2,000 seat showplace. Sightseeing and shopping in Amish Country at Bird-in-Hand and the Kitchen Kettle Village are included.

COLLEGE CLUB ACCEPTS RESERVATIONS: The College Club of Sharon will hold its April 12 meeting with an English High Tea at 1 p.m. in the First Presbyterian Church of Sharon, Fellowship Hall. Reservations are due by Tuesday to Carole Barker at 724-383-4068.

Roberta Butchy will present “Camelia Sinensis 101” the history of tea, a discussion of the process involving getting the tea in the cup, its health benefits and types of tea.

DEADLINE FOR GARDEN CLUB MEETING: The Garden Club of Ohio, Youngstown District, is accepting reservations until Tuesday for its spring meeting to be held from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. April 8, at Fellows Riverside, D.D. Davis Visitor Center in Youngstown.

District Director Mary Lou Flere will preside. The morning program will be gardening indoors presented by Laurie Boboski. The afternoon program will be “Changing Seasons, Changing Self” presented by designer Mary Lou Smith.
