Kids to learn about Underground Railroad

CURATOR TO DISCUSS UNDERGROUND RAILROAD: Sally Thomas, Sutliff Museum curator, will present a history of the Underground Railroad in Ohio through images and stories, many of which took place in Trumbull County, at 1 p.m. Saturday Warren-Trumbull County Public Library, 444 Mahoning Ave. NW. The program is for children in grades three to eight. The program will include discussion on the secret network that helped many slaves escape to freedom during the 19th century.

PROGRAM RECOGNIZES AFRICAN AMERICANS: OH?WOW!?The Roger and Gloria Jones Children’s Center for Science and Technology, 11 W. Federal St., Youngstown, will hold a program from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. today and Feb. 12 showcasing the many contributions made by African Americans in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

SCANNER GROUP MEETS: The Greater Youngstown Monitoring Association Scanner Club will sponsor a scanner-a-thon at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Boardman United Methodist Church, 6809 Market St., Boardman. Those attending can bring scanners to display. Anyone interested in scanner monitoring or amateur radio hobby is welcome. Call 330-717-8036.

BEAT GOES ON EVENT: The St. Elizabeth Heart and Vascular Center will present ”The Beat Goes On,” a community social to raise awareness about heart disease, Feb. 13 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church Hall, Youngstown.

Featured speaker is Dr. Lucas W. Henn, who will discuss cardiac valvular disease and emerging trends in treatment. There will be informational displays and a special patient survival story. For information, call 330-480-3998.
