Girard church plans chili cookoff
CHURCH HOLDS CHILI COOKOFF: Shiloh Church, 1310 Shannon Road, Girard, will hold its second annual chili cookoff from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday. There will also be a cake walk.
GROUP TO HEAR FROM SPEAKER: The Warren Sixth Ward will hold a community ward meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Grace A.M.E. Church, 1137 Main St. S.W. Guest speaker is Derrick Toles, founder of Inspiring Minds, who will discuss the “We Are Warren” campaign and how it will benefit the youth of Warren. City residents are being asked to fill out a survey that will help shape projects throughout the community.
BOOK SIGNING: Authors Louise Mason and Janine Motley will hold a book signing from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at Books-A-Million, 5555 Youngstown Warren Road, Niles. Mason and Motley will be available to sign copies of their book, “Life Lessons for Little Learners.”
MOTOWN PROGRAM: Chaney VPA will hold its annual Black History Month performance by presenting “Motown in Yo-Town!” This year’s theme will focus on the historical aspects of the Motown Era and its impact on African-American history and civil rights. School performances will take place at 12:15 p.m. today and Friday in the Chaney auditorium. A special public performance will take place at 6 p.m. today. Motown favorite songs will be performed and there will be a display of visual and commercial artwork of students throughout the main lobby and in the set design for the performance. Tickets may be purchased at the door or by calling 330-744-8830.
NIGHT AT RACES: A Night at the Races and Chinese auction will be held at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the Girard American Legion, Main Street. The first race is at 7 p.m. The night’s proceeds will benefit the Girard High School FIRST Robotics team and Jr. High School LEGO League Team. Admission is free and food will be served. The race caller is Jeff Kay. A 50/50 and Auction Race will also be held. Students in the FIRST Robotics program work throughout the year to promote the team and FIRST Robotics as well as design and built prototypes for the competition robot. The team will compete this year in Troy (Albany), N.Y., and Cleveland.
