Conference on healthy soil set

HEALTHY YOU PROGRAM SET: Earth Angel Farm and the Trumbull County Soil and Water Conservation District will present “Healthy Soil, Healthy Plants, Healthy You” education conference from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Trumbull County Agriculture and Family Education Service Center, 520 W. Main St., Cortland. The one-day conference will instruct on techniques and applications of restoring soil fertility, and vermicomposting. NIGHT OF ARTS: Howland United Methodist Christian Preschool will hold a Night of the Arts and Winter fundraiser at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. The event will include a children’s art show, poetry recitation, musical performance, and home interior and garden items. Proceeds from the fundraiser will be used to purchase children’s chairs in the preschool rooms.

BLACK HISTORY SPEAKERS: Black History Month events are being planned for Kent State University at Trumbull by the Council on Diversity. Leslie Heaphy’s address on Negro League baseball will be at noon Wednesday in the Lower Commons of the Classroom Administration Building.

At Youngstown State University, there is a poetry reading at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Jones Room, Kilcawley Center. There will be a poetry competition on subject matter related to Africa or the African-American experience or expressions inspired by historic figures.

NOMINATIONS SOUGHT: Nominations are being accepted for the Children’s Advocate Award, which will be presented by Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley at the “Champions for our Valley’s Children” celebration, which will be held May 13 at The Lake Club in Poland.

The purpose of the Children’s Advocate Award is to recognize individuals and organizations throughout the Mahoning Valley who exhibit the spirit of caring and who are working to make a difference in the lives of the children of the community.
