Historical group presents award

WARREN – As it prepares for another year of highlighting the area’s history at the John Stark Edwards House, members of the Trumbull County Historical Society presented their annual Becky Smith Scholarship Award.

This year’s recipient is Heidi Summerland of Mantua, a second-year graduate student and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Summerland.

Gina Bodor, chair of the scholarship committee and society past president, said the committee chose Summerland as the fall recipient from two applicants from Youngstown State University graduate programs.

Summerland is in her second year of graduate school, majoring in applied history with a grade-point average of 3.85.

This past year, Summerlin was an officer of the History Club, was inducted into the History Honors Society and traveled to Italy in May. The travel program is part of history department at YSU. She has worked at the Youngstown History Center, also known as the Steel Museum, and is working on an internship at the hotel in which she is employed to design and integrate tours in the Cleveland area into packages.

Summerlin is planning to graduate in August 2014 and apply to doctorate programs.

The scholarship honors the memory of Becky Smith.

Scholarship applications are available for downloading on the website at www.trumbullcountyhistory.com. Graduate students attending YSU or undergraduate students attending Kent State University at Trumbull may apply.
