Day of Service helps children

NATIONAL DAY OF SERVICE HELPS CHILDREN: The HandsOn Volunteer Network is taking part in projects on Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday as part of National Day of Service. Locally, the third annual WriteOn school supply drive collecting supplies for kindergarten to eighth grade will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Friday at HandsOn Volunteer Network, 5500 Market St., Suite 110, Youngstown, or 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Girard Multigenerational Center, 443 Trumbull Ave. Volunteers are needed to sort supplies on Monday and deliver them to local schools on Tuesday. HandsOn Volunteer Network is also recruiting volunteers to install smoke alarms on Monday. Volunteers will be trained on the installation of smoke alarms. The Save A Life Smoke Alarm program serves Warren residents, who must complete an application for a smoke alarm. For information, call Kristen at HOVN at 330-782-5877.

PARISH HOLDS WINTERFEST: Our Lady of Mount Carmel, 381 Robbins Ave., Niles, will hold a winter festival from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, and noon to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday in the lower level of the church. There will be a raffle for a flat-screen television and food popular during the summer festival will be sold for the middle of winter.

MUSEUM CLOSED FOR MONTH: The Mahoning Valley Historical Society Arms Family Museum will be closed for the month of January to take down the holiday displays. Regular hours will resume on Feb. 1.

BAND KICKS OFF NEW SEASON: The Cortland Community Band is kicking off another music-filled year under the direction of Craig Wiencek. The band meets from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays at the Cortland Middle School, Wakefield Drive. No auditions are needed and all ages are welcome. Members are from junior high to in their 80s.
