Autism Society meets for winter event
YOUNGSTOWN – Social Connections, the teen and young adult social group of the Autism Society of Ohio Mahoning Valley, has begun planning events and activities for the new year.
ASO-MV hosts the group for 18 to 25 year olds and adults 26 and older starting the fourth or last Wednesday of each month for field trips or meetings at the Autism Society of Ohio Family Resource Center, Ohio One Building.
Aundrea Cika, director, Mahoning Valley location, said the activities are appropriate for those verbal men and women with moderate to high-functioning autism.
The next event will highlight the winter sport, ice hockey, at 6 p.m. Jan. 29 at the Ice Zone, 360 McClurg Road, Youngstown.
Cika said participants will learn what makes the sport so intriguing while watching some future Stanley Cup contenders train.
Social Connections was launched in May 2013 to provide opportunities for those on the spectrum to socialize, form friendships and address general issues of interest to them all in a relaxed and supportive atmosphere.
The groups are facilitated by Doug Blecher, founder of Autism Personal Coach. Last year he expanded to the Mahoning Valley to help ASD adults live an independent and fulfilling lives.
