Barnhisel plans open house

BARNHISEL HOUSE DECORATED FOR HOLIDAYS: The historic Girard Barnhisel House, 1011 N. State St., will hold its annual Christmas open house from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday and Dec. 7, 8, 14 and 15. The theme is “A Beary Dolly Christmas” with each room of the home decorated with bears and dolls. There will be music, refreshments, music and lots of decorated trees. Guided tours will be in period costumes. The Girard Historical Society which maintains the home is selling the 2014 calendars. Special tours by appointment. EVENT HELD AT THE LAKE: Beatitude House will host the holiday “Christmas at the Lake” from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Fellows Riverside Gardens at Mill Creek Metroparks, Youngstown. The holiday event is for the entire family and includes performance by the musical group, Hey Kid, and magician, Thom Phoolery. Holiday activities for children will include ornament making, letter writing to Santa, and decorating cookies. Proceeds from the event will help families serviced by Beatitude House. ANNUAL HOLIDAY EVENT: Vernon’s Cafe in Niles will hold the 27th annual Santaland event from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dec. 8 which is a fundraising event to help Niles Community Services to help families in need at the holidays. Santa and Mrs. Claus and elves will be on hand for passing out gifts.

DEADLINE FOR TICKETS: Today is the deadline to order advance tickets to attend the 30th annual Madrigal Feast and Concert, hosted by the Lakeview High School Madrigal and Advanced Women’s Choirs. The longstanding tradition has become a rite of passage to herald the upcoming holiday season. The event will be held at 7 p.m. Dec. 6 and 7 and 5 p.m. Dec. 8 at Lakeview High School cafeteria which is transformed into a medieval castle filled with candlelight, musicians in period costumes and festive food. Advanced reservations are required and can be made by calling 330-881-4834. Commemorative Christmas ornaments will be available for donation.

MISSION IN NEED OF TOYS: The Warren Family Mission is in need of new unwrapped toys for children from infants to age 16 for upcoming Christmas toy giveaway. The mission is also planning a Christmas dinner with food donations also needed. Volunteers are needed at 330-394-5437. Items can be dropped off at 361 Elm Road or 2671 Youngstown Road, Warren.

HOLIDAY TOY DRIVE: First Place Bank’s “Lifting Hearts” holiday toy drive will have toys and gifts distributed to three United Way agencies. To participate in the Lifting Hearts holiday toy drive, the public may bring new unwrapped toys and gifts to any First Place Bank branch through Dec. 18. Once the items are collected, the local Boys and Girls Club will distribute them to the needy children and teens it serves. First Place Bank will make a monetary donation to the two other worthy United Way organizations that were in the running, the Salvation Army and Big Brothers Big Sisters; in support of the important work they do for area children.
