Vienna to host chili cookoff

VIENNA HOSTS CHILI COOKOFF: The annual Vienna Chili Cookoff will be held at 5 p.m. Oct. 14 at the fire station on state Route 193. Entries are due by 3 p.m. at the fire station for judging at 3:30 p.m. The public is welcome at 5 p.m. to purchase chili and other food items.

The event allows members of the fire department and community residents to submit chilis. Proceeds benefit the safety services and DARE program for the schools.

BIKE RIDE SET: The 10th annual Garrett Wonders Birthday Bike Ride will be held on Oct. 20. The ride will begin and end at Trumbull Career and Technical Center, with registration starting at 9 a.m. The ride will feature distances of 10K (about 6 miles) and 50K (about 31 miles) along the Western Reserve Greenway and surrounding roads.

The bike ride is a fundraising event for the Garrett Wonders Memorial Fund, which has awarded more than $30,000 in scholarships at the Ohio State University and Warren G. Harding High School.

Wonders was a 1997 graduate of Warren G. Harding and a 2000 graduate of Ohio State University, who went on to earn his master’s degree in nuclear engineering from Ohio State in 2001. As a naval officer, he was teaching advanced classes at the Naval Nuclear Power Training Command in Charleston, S.C., while he continued to pursue his love of competitive cycling.

He was on a training ride when he was struck and killed by a careless driver.

SMILE TRAIN HELPED BY SCHOOL: E.J. Blott Elementary School in Liberty partnered recently with the Smile Train for World Smile Day Celebration.

As part of Spirit Week, students have been raising funds for Smile Train, the world’s leading cleft lip and palate charity. Students took part in various activities to raise the funds.

ALUMNI EVENT SET: The Niles McKinley High School will hold the 16th annual Hall of Fame Dinner at 5 p.m. Nov. 3 at Ciminero’s Banquet Centre when eight honorees will be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Tickets purchased by mail will be given at the door the night of the dinner.

DEDICATION HELD FOR VAN: Humility of Mary Health Partners Physician Associates recently held a blessing and dedication of a new patient transport van at the Church Hill Family Health Center, 4694 Belmont Ave., Liberty. The new van offers free, round trip transportation with no service area restrictions for all HMHPPA patients. The van, which can accommodate six ambulatory and two wheelchair riders, is only for patient visits to HMHPPA practices.

CALENDARS AVAILABLE: The Newton Township Cemetery Association is selling 2014 calendars. Proceeds from the sale will help with maintenance and upkeep at the East Cemetery on North Canal Street in Newton Falls. The calendar features ink drawings by Edward P. Sinchak.

BELL RINGERS NEEDED: The Salvation Army Newton Falls Service Unit will soon begin ringing the Red Kettle Bells to raise money for those in need in the 44444 ZIP code and Newton Township. LUNCHEON SET: The GFWC Ohio Warren Junior Women’s League is planning the 44th annual Champagne Luncheon and Style Show, with the theme “Silent Night,” to be held Nov. 22 at the W.D. Packard Music Hall in Warren. Proceeds will benefit the Children’s Rehabilitation Center Scholarship Fund.
