YWCA?to host annual leadership conference
The YWCA of Youngstown’s sixth annual Women’s Leadership Conference will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sept. 27 at the YWCA, 125 W. Rayen Ave.
Part of the nonprofit’s mission is to empower women by providing programs that create opportunities for growth, leadership and success.
YWCA Executive Director Leah Brooks took the lead in bringing the women’s leadership program to the Youngstown nonprofit.
“Many YWCAs have leadership programs,” Brooks said. “Each YWCA implements a program based on their individual community need and interest. Focus groups were conducted in 2006 and 2007 to see if this program was needed.”
It was determined that there was a need for this program because women make up 51 percent of the population and 48 percent of the workforce, but only 36 percent of managers.
“Through this program, we hope to increase the percentage of women in leadership positions,” Brooks said.
Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. The keynote address, “Women in the 21st Century,” will be presented by Stephanie Hunter, chief operating officer of via680, a local company that is changing the way people and organizations communicate with the assistance of technology.
Breakout sessions will cover such topics as “Working from Home: Myths, Legends & Folklore,” “Women in Manufacturing,” “Investing in Your Future: Ways to Take Control of Financial Life,” “How to be a (Shameless) Social Media Promoter,” “Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.”
The conference includes lunch, networking and raffle prizes.
Cost for the Women’s Leadership Conference is $35 per person, $20 for full time students with valid ID, and $200 for groups of eight. Registration ends Sept. 20.
