Peace Awards to be presented

TASK FORCE TO PRESENT PEACE AWARDS: The Mahoning Valley Task Force on Crime and Violence Prevention will present its final 17th annual Peace Awards banquet at 6 p.m. Oct. 7 at the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish Hall, Youngstown. Keynote speaker for the event will be Judge Robert Douglas, retired from the Youngstown Municipal Court.

Awards will be given to individuals and organizations that have made a difference in crime and violence prevention. This year, Victoria Turnage Allen, Valley Counseling Services, Trumbull County Prosecutor Dennis Watkins, NOW Youngstown, Jackie Burley, The Youngstown Connection and Dr. Cynthia Anderson will be honored.

MUSEUM PLANS OPEN HOUSE: The Leavittsburg Heritage Association will be open from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the museum in the Polivka Building, 4901 W. Market St. Items from the community’s history will be shown.

LIBRARY OFFERS SCREENINGS: The McKinley Memorial Library in conjunction with Walgreens is offering medication awareness and blood pressure screenings from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the library. A pharmacist will be there to answer questions about medications.

ASSOCIATION TO MEET: The Garfield Neighborhood Association will meet 7 p.m. Monday at the Knights of Columbus Hall, corner of East Market Street and Genesee. The group is concerned with improving neighborhood safety, awareness and community education. Discussion will include a possible merger with the group NEWNA.

WRITERS GROUP SETS GATHERING: Area writers, both published and unpublished, are invited to attend the next meeting of Monday Night Writers, to be held 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Peaberry’s Cafe, 4350 Boardman Canfield Road, Canfield. Led by author Nancy Christie, the two-hour sessions include a mix of writing exercises, information on the creative and business aspects of writing, and group feedback. Registration is preferred. LIBRARY OFFERS HOUR CHANGES: The Warren-Trumbull County Public Library, 444 Mahoning Ave., N.W., Warren, will offer Sunday hours at the main branch from 1 to 5 p.m. The library will now be closing at 5 p.m. on Fridays, with the Tech Center closing at 4:45 p.m. on Fridays. Hours will not change at the branch libraries.

SQUARE DANCE CLUBS MAKE PLANS: The Crosstrailers and Cloverleaf square dance clubs are making plans for beginners square dance lessons and upcoming fun nights.
